An ORTHODONTIST is a dentist that straightens teeth. They carefully study the mouth and surrounding bone structure to determine where the teeth should be. They will then manipulate the teeth and bone structure using bands, wires, elastics, dental headgear and other dental appliances to balance and straighten teeth. If necessary, orthodontists sometimes extract teeth in a crowded mouth to create the desired results. Today, cosmetic options include ceramic (tooth-colored) braces; lingual braces that will fit behind the teeth; and clear, removable braces such as Invisalign®, are available. Invisalign®, which consists of a series of removable clear trays and generally requires fewer and shorter dental visits, is a very popular corrective option.
